In 1994 John worked working in the BHP Petroleum head office in Melbourne in the Petroleum Technology Group. This group was responsible for the technical evaluation, development and ongoing support of offshore oil reserves. John's responsibilities covered the design and specification of downhole equipment for a new gas field on the North West Shelf known as Macedon. This field involved some problems unique to BHP Petroleum experience. The compaction of the reservoir during the producing life required innovation in estimation and design to ensure a successful development.
The position responsibilities also extended to computer modelling and optimisation of the production equipment, core analysis and presentations to joint venture partners. Support was also provided for the ongoing well testing and evaluation program.
Towards the end of 1994, John left employment at BHP to return to the family business in order to take advantage of an excellent entry point.
